A restored old-time industrial/warehouse-style window and its sliding iron shutter--very helpful in case of fire. These became common in San Francisco--perhaps not until after the Earthquake and Fire in 1906??--although I think of them as being from the 1860s-90s.
Some old buildings from that era on both sides of the Bay have been preserved, "retrofitted" to withstand a big shake, and put into use as stores, office, restaurants. This one's in Berkeley.
