the French Broad River at Marshall, NC. This beautiful river flows north out of the southeast (on the western side of the peaks) and into the Tennessee/Ohio confluence. Finally, it arrives at the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. (Hence its name, the "French" Broad, as opposed to the English Broad that flows into the Atlantic). When I visited the Mississippi, I enjoyed knowing that the water I saw there had originated in a mountain spring near my home in western NC!
