Found this morning at the local thrift store. They asked $1.50 which I gratefully paid. I came home with a little treasure, which I think nicely sets off a few flowers from my spring garden.
The material of construction is usually the inner bark of the white oak tree, split. The contrasting colors are usually derived from natural sources, the dyes typically made from bloodroot, walnut, and butternut.
This basket appears to be of fairly recent making; to my eye the basic material appears to be split oak, but it is very hard to tell sometimes. (I've made a few baskets myself, but none this pretty!)
