The NC Mountain State Fair, that is.
North Carolina is a very wide state, 560 miles (900 km), east to west, so it is difficult for all citizens to have access to a single annual exposition. The state mounts two fairs each year, one in Raleigh, the capital, and one in the west, near Asheville, allowing farmers, growers, craftspeople, and hobbyists of all ages to show off their productions and compete for prizes. I had a lot of fun this year, entering (for the first time) eight items--five photographs (in different categories), one jar of jam, and two loaves of bread. Altogether, I won two blue ribbons, one white ribbon, and one "judge's rosette"!!
It's fun! I recommend it!!

My photograph of a nursing ewe won the blue ribbon in the Agriculture-Related Photography subject area at NC's Mountain State Fair this week! Thanks to all my Flickr and Wunderground friends for helping to make me a better photographer!

Lower middle. Two red ovals mark the representation of my loaves submitted to the Baked Goods department! The real loaves were donated, immediately after judging was complete, to local charities to feed the hungry--a worthy scheme. The ribbons marking winners (I received a 'blue' for Sourdough, and a 'white' for White Yeast Bread) were affixed to these rather odd photo representations. I'll do it again next year! Lots of fun to see what people create and what they enter into the competition!!
