. . . and named, apparently, for the Clarissa H. (an aunt?) who had died just a year earlier. (See previous frame.) This is the Blackstock family cemetery, surviving in an industrial development area in rural Buncombe County near an interstate highway. The fate of old family cemeteries in this country rests almost entirely with interested parties, despite some apparently protective laws. This family cares more than most, although work is needed here--several stones have fallen.
Made sepia with slight vignette.

Another old stone in the Blackstock family burial ground, all too close to the highway and industry, but protected for now by a high fence and family interest. Wonderful 19th century names. The family name "Israel" is still fairly common in Buncombe County.

Wife of J. W. Wells and mother of the boy, Robert B., who was killed (see two images back). It appears that she died less than a year after his birth.

Located with other mostly old family memorials in a beautiful, very small cemetery, protected by a sturdy fence. Sadly, the ground sits in the middle of a large acreage undergoing earth moving and redevelopment although, given the economy, not much is moving forward at present. I understand family descendants value this ground. It is all that remains of the original Blackstock homeplace which was apparently demolished when the nearby highway was built. I visit here every so often.

View on BLACK.

The Thomas Jefferson ("Redhead Tom") Dillingham Cemetery, one of many small family burying grounds in this rural community. Also. . . an example of. . .
Making something of very little. My color shot of this, with a long zoom on a sunny morning was washed out and hazy. Using iPhoto, I changed it to B/W and enhanced the 'color' which toned it considerably and gave it a richer texture. The image is still not sharp, of course, and I could have dampened the highlights in the middle more, I now see. Also, I made it square which allowed me to emphasize the top and bottom of the scene, including the tall trees and the ragged fence line.

Salem has three old and important cemeteries associated with the witch trial period of the city's history. Interred here at Broad Street are: George Corwin, who served as high sheriff of Essex County in 1692, and his brother Jonathan.
