Salem has three old and important cemeteries associated with the witch trial period of the city's history. Interred here at Broad Street are: George Corwin, who served as high sheriff of Essex County in 1692, and his brother Jonathan.

Shot in 2006 (when my digital camera was a new toy!) at Wytheville, VA. Old St. John's Lutheran Church, located near Interstate-81 through the mountains. A fascinating cemetery and church dating to the early 19th century and what was then a largely-German congregation. A wonderful place to enjoy a discovery walk.
Building and grounds on the National Register of Historic Places.

Shot with an Olympus SP500UZ, a so-called 'hybrid' camera. I love it, even tho I use my iPhone for most pictures these days. Moved to Flickr from Wunderground.com, which is why it does not open to full value for closer inspection.

on what is known as "Nob Hill" at Mountain View Cemetery, a very Victorian place, although it is still in active use with funerals nearly every day. Established in 1863.

I would like to find a good history of this visual design which is so common in military usage. The laurel wreath is "honor" going back to the ancient Greeks, of course. Many military and related fraternal groups use it. Seen here on a 19th century tombstone. The honored man died at age 65 in the 1880s, no doubt this signifying his service in the Civil War, although the stone doesn't mention it. Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, CA.

Photo taken in May 2006 and moved here from Wunderground.com, where I posted many pictures. (This is the graveyard where "Family Huddle" lives (a couple frames back in my 'stream'.)
