A versatile harvester designed to be towed behind a tractor, manufactured about 1946.
Once again in use during an experimental wheat harvest operation last weekend. I got to observe the whole thing and take a few shots--fascinating.
See related and watch for a video.

Using a 1946 Allis-Chalmers threshing combine belonging to the man in the picture. This was the first time it had been operated since purchase and transport from a distant state. A moment of truth for the machine and the owner. It worked! Many fine adjustments are possible in how it operates. The wheat is cut and separated, the straw (stems) and the chaff going back onto the ground, and the grain gathered into an inside bin.
Mountains of western North Carolina. As you can see from the terrain, this was never a big wheat growing area, but most farmers in the old days raised a small patch for wheat flour in the home. Many local mills operated in the 19th and early 20th century to process it.

This is apparently an Allis-Chalmers (it is labeled "All-Crop) of the type manufactured between the 1930s and the early 1960s. Here's what you might want to know!

Planted last summer; raised through the year; cut last Saturday. On the farm of my near neighbors. More shots to follow and a video or two. This is the closest I have been to wheat, and, as a bread baker, you know how affected I was! I did my best to document the process.
