A native American azalea. Delicately fragrant! Shrub.
Native to the southern mountain forests. This one is a specimen within a planned landscape.

An old-timer. . . . much beloved by gardeners and ecologists for its rich contribution to compost. The plant is very high in potassium, I read. It is an aggressive grower and it spreads, so you'll have to be vigilant or you'll have more than you want! (This is next to my rain barrels.)
It also has strong medicinal properties and is often an ingredient in craft skin salves.

I'm moved to post this after reading Jacqueline Winspear's recent blog about the California drought.
I've had mine for years, even though I live where water is quite abundant--in the mountains with lots of streams that are seldom dry, although we have our droughts, too.
No one can be complacent about the water supply these days. It behooves us all to conserve, by keeping water constantly in mind and trying not to waste it.
I should have put a bucket in the photo--may do.
