HWW!
The venerable old US Mint in San Francisco, completed 1879, side view. The building survived the 1906 fire due to perceptive leadership of those in charge and to having its own well!
Enjoyed an excellent tour of the building yesterday, sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle. Thanks, Katherine!
Inside those many windows = cast iron folding shutters--which helped save it from fire in 1906!

Completed 1879. With a venerable history--the building survived the 1906 post-earthquake fire--The Old Mint still struggles for a modern role. New plans are afoot to create a history center (City & County of SF + California Historical Society).
Here a tour of the building, offered by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Built 1879. The sandstone facing is suffering the effects of age.
Remnants (shorter than originally) of the great furnaces that once melted ore and created coins of gold and silver in this venerable building, the old U.S. Mint in downtown San Francisco. 1879.
The building is open for limited tours through the California Historical Society and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Wikipedia:
"The San Francisco Mint is a branch of the United States Mint that opened in 1854 to serve the gold mines of the California Gold Rush. It quickly outgrew its first building and moved into this new one in 1874. This Old United States Mint is one of the few that survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. It served until 1937, when the present facility was opened."
Today this old building is a museum and event facility.
