Snapped while stopped for a light. Downtown Oakland. Wednesday.
This is a fabulous old theater. Restored years ago and operated very creatively. All the old neon outside "works", including a fabulous display on the roof.

"The main auditorium is also equipped with a Mighty Wurlitzer organ hidden beneath the floor. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the historical organ rises for a brief concert before the movie."
"The sign mounted on top of the Grand Lake Theatre is the largest rotary contact sign west of the Mississippi River. It measures 52 feet (15.85m) high by 72 feet (21.95m) wide and consists of 2,800 colored bulbs and was designed by Theodore Wetteland. The firing sequence is controlled by a device much like a music box. The sign is typically lit Friday and Saturday, from dusk until the start of the last show of the night."
When my son was very small (decades ago!), we lived in an apartment on the hill behind this theater. We loved to watch the "rotary lights" give their aerial display!!
IT'S NOT SUCH A CRAZY IDEA, HAND-COUNTING BALLOTS.
IF ONLY WE WERE AS SMALL AS THE NETHERLANDS.

I'm glad I was there for a few hours, even though I did not complete the march to City Hall.
I'm also happy also to recall that I was part of the crowd marching on the National Mall for MLKing's "I Have a Dream. . . " speech in 1963. There are times when world events motivate one to be part of history.
January 21, 2017 will be remembered as such a day.
The so called 'wiring diagram' from a book I happen to have handy, 'American Ambassadors'.

NOT MY PHOTOS, but, yes, my diptych, with the help of Big Huge Labs.
--In other words--mostly MEN, mostly OLDER, mostly WHITE.
I cannot claim the clever tag line. It appeared in one of the American papers recently. I see now that it is a journalistic catch phrase that's been around for awhile--here's one from the Economist (Britain) in 2014.

**President Truman and his cabinet on the right, so I make no comparison about the presidents, except that they are EXTREMELY different men. David McCullough's massive biography is one of the best books I've ever read! Highly recommended, especially if you need an antidote to the present day horrors.
Yes, of course, the present group has at least one very young, not to say, wet behind the ears, person, and some in between, agewise. And we don't yet have "a cabinet", God forbid. But we see the trend.
(Photos are getting harder than ever to download from the web. It was so easy a couple of years ago when I was teaching classes with illustrated lectures!)
