The old Haw Branch one-room school. Reconstructed from photos at the Big Ivy Historical Park, Barnardsville/Dillingham, NC. Shot August 31, 2008. Note the open foundation; structure supported on numerous piles of local rock. Now a museum, the school is open for festivals and educational programs, such as the annual Heritage Day in October--this year on Saturday, October 8, 10AM-4PM, 540 Dillingham Rd., Barnardsville, NC (see geotag for this pic).

Main stairway. When the museum was built and opened, amidst the politics of the late 1960s, I was on the history department staff. It had been a four-year process, collecting objects, planning exhibits and working with designers. An exciting time.
From the museum's current webpage:
"The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is one of the most significant architectural examples of mid-century modernism in the United States. When it opened in 1969, OMCA's design by Pritzker prize–winning architect Kevin Roche was acclaimed for its bold and innovative premise: a museum that also serves as a vibrant urban park and public space.
"It brought together three historically independent smaller museums—for art, history, and natural sciences—under one roof. This progressive multidisciplinary approach was to celebrate the many facets of California. Our collections—comprising more than 1.9 million objects including seminal art works, historical artifacts, ethnographic objects, natural specimens, and photographs—and our programs-- explore and reveal the factors that shape California character and identity, from its extraordinary natural landscapes, to successive waves of migration, to its unique culture of creativity and innovation."

I joined this group for a 5 kilometer walk (volksmarch) this chilly but sunny morning here at the Vanderbilt mansion (built 1890s and now open as a museum).
The group call themselves the Asheville Amblers; they are members of the Americn Volkssport Association, a very active national walking organization with chapters all over. Is there one near you?
