The native weavers spread their extraordinary wares before them, and the tourists (as well as appreciative residents) flock to buy. The scene is bounded by an ancient cathedral facade and overlooked by a volcano and a typically lush sky.

Shot with an Olympus SP500UZ.

Guatemala City, Guatemala

Located on the campus of the private Universidad de Francisco Morroquin. The Ixchel Museum, named for the Maya goddess associated with women and things feminine, holds a fantastic textile collection and hosts exhibits about Guatemalan weaving and costume. It is a short, inexpensive cab ride from the hotel district. There is a wonderful tienda/shop!
The decorative brick work on the building is inspired by ancient Maya designs. Image made during a trip/visit in the summer of 2007.

In the old capital under the eyes of two volcanoes. Dwellings in this style are different from those in North America. Based on Spanish models, the 'door' is a vehicular entry giving onto an interior courtyard which then provides access to the living spaces arranged around an internal patio. Grills on the street windows are deeply historic. Everything about the design turns a protective side to the street and opens up only within.

Shot with an Olympus SP500UZ.
