Mount Saint Helens, located in southwest Washington, began volcanic activity in the Spring of 1980 after a dormant period of 127 years. This photo, taken on May 18, 1980, one hour after the major eruption blew over 2,000 feet off the top of the mountain, causing it to fall inwards and forming a crater This photograph is shot from the south, looking north from a distance of 20 miles. Mud flows can be seen cascading down the mountain. The could of volcanic particles rises up to 60,000 feet in the atmosphere and has spreed over most of the United States.
