Architect Richard Neutra designed the Modernist style house for Harrison G. and Hess J. McIntosh in 1939. The house has been described as 'private and secluded' from the lower street level and 'open and exuberant' from the upper living levels where a wrap-around terrace and walls of glass take advantage of the view to the west and south.

With its distinctive redwood siding, The McIntosh House is a departure from the 'machine' architecture associated with many of the Silver Lake homes designed by Richard Neutra. The McIntosh House is located at 1317 Maltman Avenue in Silver Lake. It was built at a cost of $3,800. It is the home of Neutra expert-architect John Bertram, principal of Bertram Architects and his wife, actress-writer Ann Magnuson. Akai House, one of nine houses designed by Richard Neutra in the 'Silver Lake Colony' between 1948 and 1961, a complimentary grouping of Neutra homes in a small geographic area. Akai House is located at 2200 Neutra Place next door to Neutra's Ohara House. It is a fascinating experience to take a walk on the east side of Silver Lake and visit the Neutra colony. Architect Eric Lloyd Wright's Ross House is in the immediate vicinity as well.

The Neutra VDL Studio & Residences, also known as the Van der Leeuw House was originally designed by Richard Neutra in 1932. The original house was destroyed by a fire in 1963. The house was rebuilt by the architect's son Dion Neutra under his father's supervision. The two residences are separated by a courtyard with the back house often occupied by Neutra's apprentices over the years, including Gregory Ain. The guest house, or VDL II has a separate entrance at 2351 Edgewater Terrace where this photo was taken. If you look closely you can see the winding staircase leading from the main house to the courtyard garden.

Architect Richard Neutra designed the house for shipbuilder John Rados and his wife Etta nee Picinich Rados and their children Evelyn and Robert in 1958. The 3-bedroom, 4-bath home in 5185 sq. ft. is currently (February 2019) on the market listed for sale for $4.1M and described in the listing as "Fifty years after his family fled the Austro-Hungarian Empire, prolific shipbuilder John Rados purchased a large, hillside lot overlooking the Port of Los Angeles and his beloved company, Harbor Boat Building.

For Rados, Neutra's designs embodied postwar modesty, technological advances, and adaptability to a newly redefined world. Massive mahogany marine-grade wood beams, terrazzo floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors define the character of the immense space. Located at the end of a long, private driveway, the unassuming facade of the Rados House hides its greatest secret: it is one of the largest Neutra-designed houses in the United States. Beyond the stone wall and slatted wood siding, over 5,000 square feet of living space have been carefully carved into the hillside.

Three bedrooms, four bathrooms, living room, television room, two dining rooms, and a downstairs family room with a full bar add to the laissez-faire informality of the idealized postwar housing experience. Multiple points access the over-sized swimming pool and broad deck including an early, somewhat whimsical, exercise in adaptive reuse: a re-purposed porthole window and door appropriated from a ship Rados' company was building".

"Neutra designed the house for the needs of three generations, creating indoor and outdoor pathways that flank social spaces rather than running through them".*
