One of the “last great railroad hotels,” La Posada Hotel was designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter for the Santa Fe Railway in 1929. The story of the hotel begins with Fred Harvey who developed and ran all the hotels and restaurants of the Santa Fe Railway, eventually controlling a hospitality empire that spanned the continent.

In the 1920s, Harvey decided to build a major hotel in the center of northern Arizona. “La Posada”—the Resting Place—was to be the finest in the Southwest. He chose Winslow, then (as now) the Arizona headquarters for the Santa Fe Railway. Colter worked for the Fred Harvey Company from 1905 until her retirement in the 1950s. Although famous for her magnificent buildings at the Grand Canyon, she considered La Posada her finest work.

Located at 303 E 2nd Street in Winslow, Arizona.

Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school from 1937 until his death in 1959. It currently serves as the campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Wright began his travels to Arizona each winter beginning in 1933, purchasing the Taliesin West land in 1937. Wright thought the location would be the "perfect spot" for his new school and residence in the desert. During his lifetime, Wright continually altered and added to the complex of buildings, all of which were constructed by students. Many of Wright's most famous buildings were designed in the drafting room at Taliesin West, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and Grady Gammage Auditorium at Arizona State University in Tempe. The complex was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982. On September 30, 2011, Donna and I made a "pilgrimage" to Taliesin West as part of our 10th anniversary road trip to Austin, Texas.

We had a memorable stop at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West on the last day of our road trip to Austin, Texas. Here, Donna is in the lounge/office where the master architect received visitors.
