The first buffalo and first animal we saw on our trip out west. It was when we were driving on the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park in South Dakota. Great park. If you are out in the area - I would definitely recommend adjusting your route through the park.

The trip that we drove out west this past summer totaled 3,352 miles and took us to some very interesting places. I know that the boys were probably bored for some of that time, but I really think that seeing the country from the road is an important cultural experience.
