As the C&NW train is going by, a BN ore train powered by three SD45s, and destined for the docks at Allouez, passes over the DW&P train. The freshly painted DW&P GP38-2s are ex-Rock Island.

A Burlington Northern local rumbles through Harmon, Illinois, on June 10, 1984. BN operated this former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy branch from Sterling to Earlville, Illinois, known as the 10th Subdivision Branch Line of the Chicago Division. By this date, trackage of the branch was deteriorating and with traffic dwindling, trains will soon no longer be operating on this 46.8-mile long line, and it would be torn up in 1985.

Burlington Northern’s very unique Trough Train slinks around six curves on Montana Rail Link’s Ten Subdivision at Perma, Montana, on September 11, 1998. These huge 278-foot, 13-unit articulated cars were designed by BN and built by Johnstown America Corporation. Each monster car had a stenciled capacity of 28,740 cubic feet. There were 23 cars built and this train could haul an equivalent of 146 standard coal hoppers, at a reduced weight due to lighter construction weight of these aluminum cars. The Trough Train was stored not long after photo was taken, and the train was sent to scrap in 2004. I believe two of the problems that occurred with these experimental cars is metal (aluminum) fatigue and that coal (dust) was very abrasive to the sliding plates of the articulated joints.

On an eastbound Burlington Northern coal train grinding up Crawford Hill west of Belmont, Nebraska, on July 9, 1994, EMD SD70MAC Nos. 9440 and 9449 bracket EMD SD60MAC No. 9503. EMD built four 3,800 h.p. SD60MAC as testbeds for A.C. traction and new HTCR trucks. This led to the development of the 4,000 h.p. A.C. traction SD70MAC that BN bought in large quantities. Nos. 9440 and 9449 are only a couple of months old at this point, built in April and May of 1994.
