Amtrak No. 3, the Southwest Chief, is about to curve through the mile 706.2 semaphores near Robinson, New Mexico, on May 20, 1999. Apparently some power issues further east on the trip has required the assistance of Burlington Northern EMD SD60M No. 9276 to pilot the train west.

In 1992-93, Amtrak tested the Swedish-built X2000. The train was built by Kalmar Verkstad, and leased to Amtrak, who tested the train and then used it in revenue service for a few months in early 1993. From May to July 1993, the train was taken on a national tour and displayed around the Amtrak system. Here, the high-speed train negotiates the Soo Line (former Milwaukee Road) trackage past Cut Off Tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 28, 1993. The train will clear the interlocking and then back to Milwaukee’s downtown Amtrak station. It was a very wet year (remember the flooding?) and this with the combination of leaking grain cars makes Cut Off look a bit more green than usual!

Amtrak No 5’s engineer gets onboard GE P42DC No. 134 on the morning of October 14, 2012. This view of the California Zephyr’s station stop in Denver from Wewatta Street will soon vanish. For several years, while Denver Union Station was being renovated as part of a major reconstruction of the real estate in this part of LoDo (Lower Downtown), Amtrak trains 5 and 6 used a temporary depot across from Coors Field. The trains are now back home to Denver Union Station.
