In a January 22, 1995, Wisconsin snowstorm, a Soo Line eastbound (with CP power) crosses the diamonds at Duplainville while Wisconsin Central train No. 243 waits for the plant. The WC train will have to wait for No. 46 to head to Milwaukee too, before it can head north (west).

The bitter cold can play havoc on track. Here, two Wisconsin Central trackmen fix broken track bolts that were sheared off by the contracting rail in a “pull apart.” A kerosene-soaked rope is placed alongside the offending rail and lit, creating enough heat for the rail to expand closing up the joint, and allowing the holes to once again line up and new bolts installed. WC train No. 2 approaches in the distance, but will have to wait until the job is done before entering Shops Yard at North Fond du Lac on the late afternoon of December 12, 1994.

Snow has been falling and nighttime is upon us at Duplainville, Wisconsin on the eve of January 26, 1996. Wisconsin Central train No. 47 is switching at the north end of Duplainville siding and on the point of today’s turn to Milwaukee is former Algoma Central SD40-2 No. 6005. The headlight and signals at the north end of the siding illuminate the falling snow in the nocturnal landscape as the train pauses for the brakeman to walk a cut of cars being picked up. Then it’s a night run to North Fond du Lac.

Wisconsin Central GP35 No. 4007 and a former C&NW GP7 are busting drifts on the former Fox River Valley line through Rockfield, Wisconsin, after a snowstorm on January 30, 1996. This line was plugged with drifts, and a former C&NW manager now with the WC decided they would plow the line with a plow extra like they used to; get a couple of locomotives, tie the horn down and run like hell through the snow. It worked. They didn’t need no stinkin’ plow! And yes, I did get hit with snow several times.
