Freshly repainted Soo Line SD40-2 No. 757 leading a freight train east (south) at Sabula, Iowa, passes a Soo grain train waiting to proceed pulled by SD60 No. 6026 on April 7, 1990. Fresh candy apple red is somewhat brighter than the Soo’s traditional red.

Soo Line (Lake States) Train No. 17, led by SD39 No. 6241, waits for the passage of Soo Train No. 203 at Springdale Road in Brookfield, Wisconsin, on June 6, 1987. Train 17 will have to wait for Amtrak No. 7 too, before crossing over at Duplainville and heading for North Fond du Lac. Former MN&S SD39 No. 6241 was the only locomotive to ever get the Lakes States lettering on the nose.

Yes, Wisconsin had a helper district. In Soo Line days, trains southbound (and somtimes northbound too) had to contend with Byron Hill, and frequently used helpers. Here, the Soo Line train led by GP9 No. 4230 has a pair of helpers shoving on the rear, consisting of Milwaukee Road GP40 No. 2000 and Soo Line (Lake States) SD39 No. 6241, on March 22, 1987.
