On June 28, 1998, Amtrak No. 5, the California Zephyr is at Clay, Colorado. This train is running 10 hours late, and is entering Clay siding to meet Amtrak No. 6! General Electric-powered by two Genesis P42s and two “Pepsi can” Dash 8-32BWHs, the train has 24 cars of baggage, Superliners, material handling cars and express cars, making for the largest CZ I ever saw.

Rio Grande Tunnel Motor No. 5401 leads Union Pacific freight MNYRO at Rollins, Colorado, on October 15, 2001. The power included 7 AC4400CWs in both UP and SP varieties and it’s possible the reason 5401 is leading because all the other locomotives are facing east! Rio Grande No. 5401 was patched and renumbered 8594 in 2005 and was eventually donated to the Colorado Railroad Museum.
