Toward sunset on October 9, 1994, a westbound coal train on the Chicago and North Western at Nelson, Illinois, is pulled by a new GE Dash 9 and two older Dash 8s. The old coaling tower over the main line from the steam locomotive days still stands today.

Chicagoland is still bathed in morning sun, but not for long as a storm moves in from the west. It’s August 10, 1986 at Milepost 13 on Burlington Northern’s triple track at Brookfield, Illinois, as an eastbound double stack cruises by with a new tiger-stripe GP50 and a SD40-2. Number 3110 is BN’s first GP50 in the new livery.
