A pair of Union Pacific’s 6,000 horsepower EMD SD90MAC-H locomotives grind away with a heavy southbound freight approaching Tunnel 2 at Bealville, California. The train is in the middle of a long climb of Tehachapi Pass during the pleasant spring afternoon of March 27, 2001. I believe the steel ties stacked in the foreground were being replaced at the time.

Running south (east) on the Santa Fe, Amtrak San Joaquin No. 708 passes Stockton Tower over the Southern Pacific diamonds, led by new GE Dash-8-32BWH “Pepsi Can” No. 501 on March 7, 1993. This California landmark (by railroad standards anyway…) was torn down on May 27, 1999.

A Santa Fe westbound passes a Joshua tree west of Jimgrey, California, on March 7, 1996. Even though the railroad is now officially BNSF at this date, it’s hard to tell. Powering the train are six EMDs: lead locomotive SD45-2 No. 5801, a GP39-2r, a GP50, a GP20, and followed up with two SD40-2s.
