An eastbound Gateway Western Railway freight approaches West Bottoms in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 16, 1990. The train is passing some idle Chicago and North Western locomotives, and has just met a Burlington Northern intermodal, the rear passing the Old Union Depot Interlocking tower in the background. GWWR No. 2023 is former Penn Central/Conrail EMD GP38 No. 7762. With Santa Fe backing, the Gateway Western Railway was formed in 1989 (beginning operations in January, 1990) by purchasing the former Alton route between Kansas City and St. Louis from bankrupt Chicago, Missouri and Western. This gave Santa Fe access to St. Louis, which after the BNSF merger in 1995, became redundant. In 1997, GWWR was purchased by Kansas City Southern and operated as a subsidiary until 2001.
