On March 14, 2002, the Grand Canyon Railway train has arrived at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The passenger train is led by a matched set of Alco-designed Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) FPA-4s built in the late 1950s.

Green Bay and Western Alco RS27 No. 310 is on the west end of Train No. 1’s power set at Green Bay, Wisconsin. Nothing super exciting about the image, but it is one of my very first 35mm railroad photos taken in June 1979, when I was a 15-year-old that didn’t know any better. And I think the area has changed just a bit too . . .

As the crew eats at a local beanery at Little Lake, Michigan, the locomotives for the Chicago and North Western ore train bound for the dock at Escanaba, patiently wait in the siding during the twilight of October 18, 1986. At this point, C&NW ore trains were still being powered by the big ex-Norfolk and Western Alco C-628s, but they were in the twilight of their careers too.

One of the few (maybe the only) times a former LS&I Alco RSD-15 “Alligator” led a Fox River Valley train. The freight is entering Butler Yard on the C&NW on a cold February 24, 1990. Trailing the former Santa Fe/LS&I/GB&W Alco are two former BN SD24s, Nos. 2401 and 2402. I lived in Butler at the time, making getting trains like this a bit easier.
