A westbound Rio Grande freight led by Tunnel Motor No. 5353 exits Tunnel 8 west of Plainview Colorado, on… well, just for fun, I thought some viewers might enjoy seeing a photo or two once in a while from my N scale Moffat Road. I have built a model railroad in my basement (19 feet by 25 feet) that approximately represents Rio Grande’s climb from Denver to the Moffat Tunnel. For those not familiar with the scales in model railroading, N scale is 1/160 in size. So the trains stand about an inch tall and a forty-foot boxcar is 3 inches long. I hope you enjoy the occasional foray into photographs of the Moffat Road—160th size.

There is a dusting of snow in the higher elevations above Crescent, Colorado. All three Rio Grande German-built Krauss-Maffei diesel hydraulic locomotives guide an eastbound freight out of Tunnel 26 east of Pinecliffe. These N scale locomotives were scratchbuilt and then cast in resin, and use Kato mechanisms for power.

A westbound empty UCEX hopper train has just met an eastbound load at Clay, Colorado. The rear of the eastbound train is still passing the hopper car windbreak on Big 10 Curve, and is rumbling over the west switch at Rocky. Soon, the westbound will figure out why his air isn’t coming up as fast as it should, and will take down the west signal at Clay. Good old Rio Grande action on the N scale Moffat Road… my version of Big 10 anyway…

An unusually clean pair of Rio Grande GP40s roar by as they push on the caboose of a westbound freight at Rocky, Colorado. The four locomotives on the head end of the train are working hard on the 2-percent grade as they approach Big 10 Curve. Waiting patiently in Clay siding above is eastbound train No. 100. All the action on the N scale Moffat Road…
