On a cold New Year’s Eve in 1985, I set out to shoot a train or two on the short but sunny day. I set up at the venerable Brookfield depot, which still had its Milwaukee Road logo on it. A horn blows for Pilgrim and Calhoun Roads, signaling a westbound approaching. My goal was to capture a photograph of one last Milwaukee Road train on that railroad’s very last day of existence before Soo Line officially took over. With a fast fading sun sinking into the western horizon, the train appears over Brookfield Road. What? No way! Two Katy locomotives roar past with a freight. So this ended up being my final “real” Milwaukee Road photo on December 31, 1985, if you don’t count the orange bay-window caboose I shot on the rear of this train!

Two Missouri-Kansas-Texas Lines EMD SD40-2s rest in the locomotive facility at Glen Park Yard in Kansas City, Kansas, on December 8, 1985. More commonly called M-K-T and Katy, the railroad bought 37 SD40-2s from EMD from 1978-1981, built mostly to run on jointly-operated unit coal trains with Burlington Northern. Painted in John Deere green, also called Whitman green, a scheme introduced in 1972 by Reginald Whitman who became Katy’s president in 1970.
