Even though the date is September 17, 1996, winter is creeping in on Cumbres Pass, Colorado. Road engine C&TS K-37 No. 497 rests as K-27 No. 463 cuts out of the freight train amid a heavy snow. This is a former Rio Grande narrow gauge route.

A cold rain has turned to wet snow as a Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad photo freight is on the eastern approach of Cumbres Pass, Colorado, on September 17, 1996. All former Rio Grande, Mikado K-37 No. 497 is the road engine, with Mikado K-27 No. 463, barely visible in the background, cut in the train ahead of the caboose.

Eureka and Palisades No. 4 heads south out of Silverton, Colorado, on the bright morning of August 24, 2010. Instead of the colorful yellow coach and caboose that No. 4 usually pulls, two D&SNG coaches repainted green are on the drawbar of today’s train back to Durango.

The sun has already set in the mountain town of Silverton, Colorado, on the evening of August 23, 2010, with both wood and coal smoke filling the dusky air. Denver and Rio Grande Western narrow gauge 2-8-0 No. 315, a member of D&RGW’s C-18 class, sits on the main line near the depot with a freight. Next to this train in Silverton’s passing siding is the Eureka and Palisade No. 4, a wood-burning 4-4-0 that has just arrived in town after a trip to Cascade. Rio Grande No. 315 was built in 1895 as a Florence and Cripple Creek locomotive, while E&P No. 4 was built in 1875! Both trains are part of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad’s Railfest 2010 activities.
