From last week on the Big Island of Hawai'i, I got up early to drive from the warm, dry comfort of Waikoloa into the eye of the storm toward Laupahoehoe. It was raining hard and I was not sure I would get a shot, but I set up and waited for the clouds to break.

Thank goodness my cameras are fully water-sealed as that is one less thing to worry about when trying to find a composition and wait for the best light during a downpour.

It was still raining when the clouds parted enough to let the sun peek out. I was happy the morning excursion had been worthwhile.

Lens is the new weather resistant DFA 15-30 on the Pentax K3II. There wasn't room in my carry-on to bring my 645 rig this trip, so I brought my compact kit which often surprises me.

Mahalo for looking & Aloha!

Just after sunset at Secret Beach, Maui, aka Makena Cove. A tiny spot but so beautiful. Would you believe there were 4 weddings taking place while we were here. I am pretty sure My squatting self will make it into a few wedding albums; but we all must coexist on the beach, right? The final bride and groom of the evening opened a basket to release four pigeons, i mean doves. I was hoping they'd turn up in my photo, but they got outta there fast...I'm thinking they were needed back at Cheeseburger In Paradise...wait that came out wrong, the birds aren't the mystery meat, they tirelessly patrol the floors for handouts. I'd better stop.

Lens is the Sigma 10-20

If you are wondering...yes, there WERE mosquitoes!

This is from our family trip to Maui in October 2012. The location of this home is so deliberate and inspiring, I was excited to spot it just as I was about to head back to my truck, following some pre-dawn shooting from the edge of a cliff.
The spot is near Kahakuloa on the east side of West Maui...I know that sounds like an oxymoron.

Lens is the FA 77 Limited.

This quiet lush spot in the Waipi'o Valley of Hawaii's Big Island is immediately adjacent to a vast black sand beach, a raging river, and a vista of steep cliffs in every direction. As such, it was a challenge for this photographer to aim the camera down and upstream to capture a comparatively less exciting vista in the forest.

Following my harrowing Jeep descent in the rain by darkness down the narrow ledge that hugs the edge of a cliff, I eventually found myself here, completely alone save for a few wild horses grazing silently amid the flowers.

Lens is the FA77mm f/1.8 Limited. This is a portion of a much larger panorama which I will also share for you, as the entire scene is certainly worth a look.

The morning sky was ablaze at this remote cliffside above Kahakuloa village around the back side of West Maui.

Though it took me hours to reach this spot by car and foot from Wailea, the Kahului airport is actually in this image on the horizon. I had to wait for planes to stop landing to take the shot. So much for getting away from it all, lol.

Landscape photography often finds us alone with nature, seeing things others do not ordinarily see. I hiked down the steep rocks alone in the dark to experience the first rays of morning on the ocean...all this while clinging to the cliff face. It was truly thrilling.

This is a 2-exposure blend using my trusty Sigma 10-20 at 10mm. This image appeared in the "Hot Shots" issue of Camerapixo magazine.

Aloha!
