When you talk about the Great Smoky Mountains, you are talking about layers of blue mountain ridges fading off into the distance. It's basically the most iconic shot you can get down there. For this shot, I waited until a little after sunrise so that I could get some nice warm light fading into the ridges furthest away so they end up orange while the ones in the foreground stay blue.
We just returned from a week-long trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park last week, so I have lots more photos of mountain ridges, wildflowers, and streams to share. Buckle up, because it is going to be a visual adventure like no other! (Actually, it will probably be similar to when I posted a series of photos I posted from Acadia last fall).
Photos from this series, along with others, are available as prints. You can check them out on my website: bit.ly/2IGqA0z. I can do a variety of sizes, with or without a frame, print or canvas wrap. Message me for details.

Starting off this series by playing the hits! Laurel Falls is a very popular 80-foot tall waterfall near the park entrance, and it only takes a 2+ mile round trip hike to see it. So when I took this photo, it was a little crowded. In front of us, we had two young reckless southerners climbing the rock cliffs of the waterfall and then behind us, we had a group of bros taking what Caitlin described as a group "bro-tograph". Nevertheless, the magic of photography (and photoshop) has made that all disappear and we are left with a nice peaceful picture of a waterfall.
Also, for the photographers out there, I just want to say that I think between .5s and 1s exposures are really the sweet spot for streams and waterfalls. I used to try to go longer with neutral density filters, but then I never liked the way the final photo looked when I got back to my computer. This one was .5 seconds, and I think it was enough to make the falls look silky smooth.

The people have spoken! They want wildflowers. Who am I to stand in their way?
This photo is from Porter's Creek Trail in the Greenbrier section of the park. Definitely the best hike of the trip. The most abundant display of wildflowers we saw all week (areas of the forest straight up carpeted in white and purple) plus a huge waterfall. More photos from this hike to follow in the upcoming days and weeks.

I'm not sure why they gave the guy from HBO a cabin in the Smokies, but I guess that's why I'm not in charge of the National Park Service...

All trees are good. Flowering trees are better. Dogwoods are almost the best. To be precise, they are second best.
Almost the best, but not quite.
