The legend of Ma-ee-san near Jeonju goes like this: in the little house in the foreground lived a mountain spirit couple with their two children. When the time came for them to return to the heavens, the mother was supposed to wake them in the middle of the night. But she overslept. The sun was rising, but her husband persisted. As they started their ascent on high, a crone drawing water nearby saw their eerie forms and shrieked in terror. The father furiously seized the children from his wife and put them on his back, but it was too late. They had been discovered and so were turned to stone on the spot. To this day you can see the hapless man on the left with the children on his back and the petrified woman to the right, her back bent in abject remorse.
In winter the peaks are called Munpil-bong, because, no matter how much it snows, the edges remain dark like the ink on a calligrapher's brush.
