We were fortunate to come across a family of four in a large tree by the road. They were quite relaxed, but after a while decided to cross the road. First the two adults leaped high over our heads across the road onto the top of a bamboo clump. The younger of the two offspring, about half the size of the adults, followed their example, and just made it over the road.

The most widely distributed of the hornbills, it can be found from India right down across SE Asia. It is one of the smaller hornbills and is still common. Its markings, especially round the eyes, give it a comical air, and its behaviour often lives up to this.
