Freiburg im Breisgau
Platz der alten Synagoge
The square of the Old Synagogue in Freiburg im Breisgau, with its square footprint of 130 × 130 metres, is the second largest inner-city square after Münsterplatz.
The square was named in 1996 after the synagogue destroyed in the November pogrom of 1938, which had been built in the southwest of today's square in 1869/1870.
The square is home to the City Theatre and the Collegiate Building II of the Albert-Ludwigs-University. To the south, at Sedanstraße, is the University Square, where the Collegiate Building I and the University Library (Architect: Heinrich Degelo) are located.
From around 1927 to 1939 and after 1945 to the 1980s, the entire area between Bertold- and Belfort-Straße was named Werthmannplatz until the former synagogue became Europaplatz. The university square has had its name since 2007.
