Thailand is a rich repository of religious culture and belief at least in its iconography and things of yore.

Wat Khunaram, pronounced with the last syllable extended and almost a falsetto is in Koh Samui where a mummified monk is the attraction.

This is obvioulsy a float showcasing the rich traditions and myths of Gods like Garuda ( for that is what I conclude) with wings of an eagle and the body of a human being who figures in many tales of HInduism texts and also as a continuation in Buddhism etc as practiced in Thailand.

Garuda is supposed to be a vehicle for Lord Vishnu but here he seems to be chastising a boar like demon though most depictions in INdia would be of Garuda battling with snakes.

The cold wind blows not so fiercely here. Atleast not in the day time. Nubra is a desert with massive sand dunes in between the Himalayan and the Karakoram ranges where the river Shyok flows. This is still the Kashgar - Leh - Kashmir silk route of the good old days.

Diskit is a monastery in the Nubra valley after you cross over via the Khardungla Pass from Leh. The 106 feet tall statue of the peaceful Buddha faces the river Shyok and is a comparatively recent addition to the skyline.

I was here when the sun was beginning its climb upwards

This here is the view from the guard rails of the Maitreya Buddha statue enclosure and showpieces a small yellow roofed enclosure with a red stair case and a redder carpet leading to it. Perhaps a welcome was planned for some event or some VIP. I know not.

It looked surreal in the autumnal backdrop of the landscape.
