This pre- Celtic monument dates back to at least 5,000 BC and some of the stones placed in Astronomical alignment weigh up to 25 tons. Many had to be moved from at least 100 miles away in Wales. An amazing feat of engineering. A new theory is that it also represented a union of almost all Celtic tribes south of Scotland and it makes sense as it would take the work of thousands of people over 100 plus years to build. The side was actually once almost 10 times bigger with an edifice even 5 times larger. Before there were stones the pagans used lodge which may carbon date back as far as 10,000 BC. Easy to reach as day trip from London or via Salisbury, a lovely village town 30 minutes away.
