Lake Konigsee's landmark, the chapel of St. Bartholomew, can only be reached by boat. This world-famous church, originally dating back to the 12th cent., lies at the tip of a picturesque peninsula. Neighboring the chapel stands the former hunting lodge of Berchtesgaden's provosts and Bavaria's kings, today an idyllic location for an inn.
We were there on a snowy day in the fall. The mountains were mysterious and commanding. Many fine hikes and walks can be taken from this departure point.
The Palace and pilgrimage church were founded by the Prince-Provosts of Berchtesgaden in 1134. The triple-concha design of the church dates back to 1697; the stucco-work is by the Salzburg master Joseph Schmidt. In the 18th century the summer and hunting palace was rebuilt, with older building sections incorporated. After Berchtesgaden became part of Bavaria in 1810, the palace became a hunting lodge for the Bavarian kings and was one of their favourite haunts. Since the Romantic period, the world-famous pilgrimage church, set against the Watzmann range, has been a source of inspiration for numerous landscape painters.
The church is on Lake Konigsee lies below the Watzmann, nestled in the mountains of Berchtesgaden National Park in southern Germany.

I took this about midway up the lake on a ratther cloudy and chilly October day .The Königssee is a lake located in the extreme southeast of the German State of Bavaria (Bayern), near the German-Austrian Border. Lying near the Bavarian town of Berchtesgaden in the municipality of Schönau am Königsee, just south of the Austrian city Salzburg in the German Alps, the Königssee is the third deepest lake in Germany. The lake was formed by glaciers during the last ice age. It is 7.7 kilometers long and about 1.7 kilometers across at its widest point. Except at its outlet, the Königsseer Ache at the village of Königssee, the lake is surrounded by steeply rising flanks of alpine mountains (2.000 m), including the fabled Watzmann.
Riding the boat is a fabulous experience and so easy for people of all ages. If you go early you can have time for a picnic and hiking in serveral spots during the winter fall season the boat alas with only go half way up but its still one glorious journey.
The literal translation appears to be King's Lake, but this is not correct. While König does indeed mean king, the name of the lake comes from the first name Kuno, which appears in several historical sources, and it was formerly called Kunigsee.[1]
The lake is noted for its clear water and is advertised as the cleanest lake in Germany. For this reason, only electric driven boats, rowboats and pedal boats have been permitted on the lake since 1909. The lake and surrounding parklands are very popular with tourists and hikers.
In addition, the lake's position surrounded by mountains creates an echo, which is known for its clarity. On boat tours, it has become traditional to stop and play the trumpet to display the echo. Its a moving experience that with possibly move you to tears.

These three business men really enjoy there drinking tradition. There are so many good beers to chose from in Munich. One of my favorite places was the Augisteener Brewrey which also served up good food and is a fine place to meet and mingle with the locals. Everyone has different opinions on there choice of best brew.
I saw this stien in a local shop and thought it was very funny and maybe a little bit true as to how some people (guys) celebrate a little bit too much. Octoberfest actually occurs mostly in September and I hear its really a crazy scene. I got to Munich a week later thank goodness so my hotel was more affordable and the streets and shops were not overflowing with imbibers. A great city and interesting place with great beers.

Walking around the historic buildings of Nurenberg is fun and full of learing too.
This was a trade center for hundreds of years and a booming center of Bavaria
in medieval times. Because of its association with the Nazi rallys it was mostly destroyed by carpet bombing in World War two but now walking around the old town
is feeling of harmony with cobblestone streets, restored churches, great museums and concerts of all kinds on a very regular basis
I was here on a very overcast day so I did intensify my treatment here to make it so to speak more postcardy or a touch of emotional nostalgia. That the feeling I had as I walked these lovely streets..

Early fresh snow in the Alps makes for a glorious site in Bavaria. This is near the famous Eagle's Nest area. Lovely region of lakes, forests, hiking trails and only about an hour away from the bigger cities of Munich and Salzburg. Its very popular with families and Germans and not quite so crowed and expensive as the Swiss mountain region. Wonderful travel spot on the amzing planet earth.
