The Woolworth Building, at 57 stories, is one of the oldest—and one of the most famous—skyscrapers in New York City. More than 95 years after its construction, it is still one of the fifty tallest buildings in the United States as well as one of the twenty tallest buildings in New York City.
The Woolworth Building was constructed in neo-Gothic style by architect Cass Gilbert, who was commissioned by Frank Woolworth in 1910 to design the new corporate headquarters on Broadway, between Park Place and Barclay Street in Lower Manhattan, opposite City Hall.
On completion, the Woolworth building overtook the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower as the world's tallest building; it opened on April 24, 1913.
With splendor and a resemblance to European Gothic cathedrals, the structure was labeled the Cathedral of Commerce by the Reverend S. Parkes Cadman during the opening ceremony. It remained the tallest building in the world until the construction of 40 Wall Street and the Chrysler Building in 1930.

Competition for originality is fierce in the design world of New York City. For those of us that only viisit its an overwhelming experience to walk up the stree and gawk at the variety of shapes and colors in Manhattan's urban concrete jungle.
This building is definately startling in concept. I dont really like it but it does stand out from the crowd with its color and shape. I would call it anti harmonious but it does get attention.

Taking a break in the middle of Manhattan to read a good book on the great lawn of Central Park. A city with trees is so much nicer then one without them. Skycapers are nice but we humans need green spaces to soul our harried souls and calm our too busy minds. A great park in a great city, one of the best ideas in American urban planning thanks to the design of Olmstead and the vision of leaders and dreamers.
