this artifact will undoubtedly require explanation....... back in the mid 1970s, 2 colleagues and i were taking a summer science seminar, sponsored by the national science foundation, called ESS (elementary science study). we spent 6 weeks doing hands-on science units and then were to go back and teach the teachers in our local school systems. there was a unit about discovering your neighborhood/school environment by studying footprints and to that end we mixed up plaster of paris and went out in search of prints of local fauna. we posited that this was a dog since we were on the campus of boston college, which is more urban than rural
