At about 11:45A on Sunday, March 8, 2009, tornado sirens sounded on the west and northwest sides of Springfield as a combination of a tornado, straight-line winds in excess of 70 mph, and a microburst sped across the Capital City. The fast moving storm damaged buildings, homes, apartment complexes, and trailer parks. Trees could be seen torn from their roots, with several landing on and, in a few instances, landing inside homes. Fences were leveled, power lines knocked down, and car windows could be found smashed from the debris. The storm caused temporary power outages in the affected parts of the city. Fortunately, there were no fatalities and few injuries were reported.

This series of photos shows some of the damage beginning on Springfield's west side and moving northwest. The photos begin at the corner of Victoria Dr. and Brandywine Rd., which is only a block from our home.
