We begin our tour of Buffalo at the McDaniel House, which is the home of Buffalo Mayor William "Bill" Vetter and his wife Jane. Jane's great uncle, Levi McDaniel, built this house in 1900, and Bill and Jane are its third owners.

Jane Vetter is a lifelong resident of Buffalo, and told me she remembered playing at the house as child while its second owner, a Dr. Johnson, used what is now the living room for his dental office.

That's Mayor Vetter on the porch, who is going to be our tour guide. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention Mr. Vetter was my for boss for about 15 years at the State of Illinois. He was a great leader to work for in every sense the word, and was highly respected in the IT and telecommunications communities.

Buffalo is a village in Sangamon County, and is located about 13 miles east of Springfield. The population was 491 at the 2000 census.

With the Mayor at my side, we're off to Buffalo's business district, known locally as "uptown." I asked the Mayor why it is referred to as "uptown." "Because it's on a knoll," he says, "with everything else on a downward slope."

This view shows the heart of uptown and is looking west on W. Elm from Wells St. The Town & Country Bank on the corner is in a remodeled building that once was the home of the Farmers State Bank. The 2-story concrete block structure is the Turley Building, built in 1905 and now the home of Logan's Bar. The other buildings are all about 80 to 100 years old.

Buffalo is a village in Sangamon County, and is located about 13 miles east of Springfield. The population was 491 at the 2000 census.
