Philadelphia Record & PO on Chestnut c1904 Postcard

A content-rich view of Chestnut Street in the first years of the Twentieth Century. This view looks west on Chestnut from Ninth St.

On the right is Philadelphia's twenty-second post office, fronting on Chestnut, Ninth and Market Sts. The Post Office was its popular name, but it also served as a federal building and US Court. This structure, designed by Alfred Mullet, took eleven years to build and was completed in 1884. Mullet is also known for the Mullet Post Office at the south end of City Hall Park in New York City.

Seen behind the post office is the massive granite office of the Philadelphia Record newspaper which was founded in 1870, and last published in 1947. The six story building was distinguished by a tower rising 137 feet above the street.

West of the Philadelphia Record is the the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company building. It's tower - which looks like something off of a castle - rose to a height of 205 feet. And crossing Tenth St., the Viceroy Building is found on the northwest corner.
