A view of the Morgan County Courthouse in Jacksonville, Illinois. Completed in 1869, the three-story limestone courthouse was designed in a combination of Italianate and Second Empire styles by Chicago architect Gurdon P. Randall (1821-1884). The design is considered unusual among county courthouses, as counties generally preferred more traditional designs. Randall's design features an arched loggia surrounding the building's southern entrance, asymmetrical towers at the southern corners with mansard roofs and bracketed cornices, arched dormers within the towers' mansards, and an assortment of round-head and bulls-eye windows.

The Morgan County Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1986. The courthouse also contributes the Jacksonville Downtown Historic District listed in the NRHP.

A drone view showing the south and west sides of Jacksonville's square, known as Central Park. The square and surrounding buildings form the heart of the Jacksonville Downtown Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2018.

The commercial buildings represent a number of architectural styles from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries. Most of the buildings in the district have Italianate and High Victorian Eclectic influences, but there are also examples of Romanesque, Revival, Commercial Style, Classic Revival and Modernism.

Development in the district began in 1825, when Jacksonville was platted and the public square was created; the first buildings on the square were built the same year. Most of the buildings in the district were built between the 1840s and 1940s, and a large number were built during a late nineteenth century building boom. Seven of the buildings were once cigar stores, a reflection of Jacksonville's large cigar making industry.

Founded in 1825, the City of Jacksonville is the seat of Morgan County. The central Illinois city had a population of 17,616 at the 2020 census.
