Columbia Elementary School was designed by the firm of Spencer & Temple and opened in 1905. The original building shown in all three photos in this series is done in Georgian Revival style. I was unable to find any information about the addition on the north end of the school shown in image #3 in the series but, from its appearance, my guess is that it was added some time between the late 1920s and 1930s.

In the last quarter of the 20th century, the aging school closed and reopened a few times for different uses by Champaign School District #4. Renamed Columbia Center, until 2009 the school was the site of the district's alternative program for middle and high school students. At the time I took this these photographs in 2011, Columbia was the temporary home of the Booker T. Washington School. Now it is the site of Kids Plus, a before and after school program.
