Originally developed to simulate lunar landing operations, after the Apollo Program the structure was converted into a drop test facility used to simulate aircraft crashes. The grid screen at the left of the facility is used as a backdrop for the impacts to allow engineers to measure angles and impact speeds.

Description This image shows an aerial view of NASA Dock at Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) with four barges, (left to right) Paleamon, Promise, Poseidon, and Orion. The barges ferried Saturn IB and Saturn V stages between Marshall Space Center (MSFC); Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF); Mississippi Test Facility (MTF, currently Stennis Space Center); and Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

The Houston-based Mission Control Center is in the center of the frame. Visible buildings surrounding the mall area include the Flight Operations Facility, Crew Systems Laboratory, Photographic Technology Laboratory, Technical Services shop, branch cafeteria, Mission Control Center office wing and the Central Data Office.

View of the Hangar and Main Gate at NASA's John H. Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. Formerly known as the Airplane Engine Research Laboratory (AERL) under the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA),and then renamed the Lewis Research Center, for George W. Lewis, NACA Director of Aeronautical Research. It was renamed the John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in 1999. Here aircraft engines and spacecraft propulsion systems are developed and tested.
