Backdropped against planet Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope is shown sporting new and modified solar arrays stowed against its side. A spacewalking astronaut is visible in the foreground of the picture.

The 59th shuttle flight and the last of 1993, STS-61 was one of the most challenging and complex manned missions ever attempted. During a record five back-to-back spacewalks totaling 35 hours and 28 minutes, two teams of astronauts completed the first servicing of Hubble since it was launched in April 1990. The STS-61 mission was launched aboard Space Shuttle Endeavor on December 2, 1993.

Flight controllers Harry Black (left foreground) and Kevin McCluney (right foreground) monitor the televised activity of two spacewalkers during the first extravehicular activity of Servicing Mission 1. Astronauts F. Story Musgrave and Jeffrey A. Hoffman were performing a variety of equipment replacements. At the Integrated Communications Officer Console, Black plays a role in controlling the TV, while McLuney's duties deal with maintenance, mechanical, arm, and crew systems.

Kathryn C. Thornton lifts the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) on STS-61 prior to its installation into the Hubble Space Telescope. Thornton is anchored to a foot restraint on the end of the Remote Manipulator System arm. Crewmate Thomas D. Akers, assisting in the COSTAR installation, is at the lower left.
