Being in among Assateague's Wild Horses
is always an amazing experience. These horses are a tough bunch, surviving the scorching heat, abundant mosquitoes, stormy weather and minimal food found on this remote, windswept barrier island. They are wild and to be respected and enjoyed from a safe distance.
"Local folklore describes the Assateague horses as survivors of a shipwreck off the Virginia coast. While this dramatic tale of struggle and survival is popular, there are no records yet that confirm it." nps.gov
