Washington Monument
architect - designer: Robert Mills, 1815
sculptor: Enrico Causici, 1829
architectural style: American Neoclassicism, Doric order (column)
material: White marble, quarried in Cockeysville, MD
beginning date: 1815
completion date: 1829
cornerstone laid: July 4th,1815
The Baltimore Washington Monument was the first monument planned for George Washington. The 178 foot high, Doric column sits atop a rectangular base which houses a small museum. Atop the column, stands Causici's statue of George Washington. Mills' design was inspired by the Colonne Vendôme, which was inspired by Trajan's Column. Washington is depicted in his military uniform and wrapped with classical drapery, resigning his commission in the Continental Army (Annapolis, 1782). His right arm is extended, handing over a scroll.
