GROTON, Conn. (Aug. 3, 2021) Capt. Todd Moore, commanding officer, Naval Submarine Base New London, presses the “big, red button” to trigger an underwater air cannon during a visit to the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL). When triggered, the cannon releases a large blast of air into a tank containing 4,000 pounds of water, causing the tank to jump several inches off the ground. This demonstration was one stop on a tour of NSMRL attended by staff from Fitch High School and Groton Public Schools. The staff from Fitch are interested in founding a Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) at the school and discussed potential collaborations with NSMRL to further that effort. NSMRL has lines of research that align with the NNDCC curriculum and a longstanding commitment to mentoring youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The lab’s mission is to sustain the readiness and superiority of our undersea warriors through innovative health and performance research. (U.S. Navy photo by Erica Casper/Released)
