Can you imagine life without indexing?

The origins of indexing can be traced back to the 3rd century in the Library of Alexandria, where curators attached tags to scrolls to record their contents and position. The first printed subject index was in 1467, in St. Augustine's De arte praedicandi, printed by Fust and Schoeffer in Mainz. The index included guide letters in the margin to help locate entries.
