A monument dedicated to the Victims of War and Tyranny, the New Watchhouse stands on Unter den Linden Boulevard, formerly in East Berlin. A modest neoclassical building from 1818, it has always incorporated some memorial to the fallen, although its history has seen many forms, in testament to the ideological fluctuations of 20th century Germany.
In its current manifestation, an open oculus transmitting snow and rain sits above a bronze statue of a mother holding her dead son, sculptor Käthe Kollwitz, along with the grave of an unknown soldier and a concentration camp victim. It is a place of great sorrow.
